Options for Selling Your Annuity Payment
![]() |
If you have a structured settlement that you're thinking about selling, it's important to understand all the options that are available to you. For example, you can sell all of your payments, or just a portion of them. If you're not sure which choice is best for you, try doing some online research. These days there are lots of professionals online who can help you decide how you should sell your annuity.
You might want to sell only part of your annuity payments. This is a good choice for anyone who needs a lump sum but also desires a steady source of reliable income. If you run into a financial crisis this can be the ideal way to take care of it without sacrificing all your payments. The amount of future payments will, of course, be reduced. However although they will be less, you will still continue to get them. Selling a portion of an annuity isn't the best thing for everyone, however. It's important to weigh all the pros and cons before making a choice in this matter.
Annuities can be sold at any point during their term. For example, if you've got a twenty year annuity and there are ten years remaining, you can certainly choose to sell those ten years worth of payments. Or, you could sell five years. How many years of payments you sell is totally up to you. Let's say you sold five years of a ten year annuity. You would get a lump sum and you would receive the remaining five years worth of payments.
Of course, you can sell your entire annuity for one large lump sum. You will need an experienced broker to come up with a figure that represents the value of your payments. They will take factors like inflation and cost of living into consideration when calculating the current and future value of your annuity. The value of your annuity today is going to be less than its value in the future. This means that when you sell for a lump sum, you end up with less than you would if you kept your structured settlement payments.
If you're interested in selling part or all of your annuity, the first thing you need to do is consult with a trusted financial professional who specializes in this area. With a big financial decision like this, careful consideration is important to ensure you make the right choice for yourself now and in the future.
